Getting Started
Questions about becoming an author and beginning your publishing journey.
I want to publish a book. Where do I start?
Start by telling us about your book and where you currently are in the process.
You may have an idea, an unfinished draft, a completed manuscript, an edited manuscript or even an already published book requiring additional support.
Our Start Your Publishing Journey process is designed to help us understand your project before determining the appropriate next step.
Do I need a completed manuscript before contacting you?
No. You can approach us at the idea, planning, writing, manuscript or publication stage.
If you haven't written the manuscript yet, Author Development may help you develop the concept, intended reader, positioning, structure and content direction.
What if I have an idea for a book but don't know how to write it?
An idea can be a legitimate starting point.
Author Development can help you clarify what the book is about, who it is for, what it should cover and how the content could be structured before or while the manuscript is developed.
I've never published a book before. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Our services are designed to support first-time authors as well as authors who have published before.
You don't need to understand every technical part of publishing before starting your project.
Do I have to know which publishing service or package I need?
No. Tell us what you currently have and what you want to achieve.
Once the project is better understood, the relevant individual services, package or customised scope can be identified.
What kinds of books do you work with?
Projects may include fiction, non-fiction, biographies, memoirs, business books, self-development books, educational publications, history and heritage books, faith-based books, poetry, children's books, workbooks, guides and other suitable publications.
The exact requirements depend on the nature and complexity of the project.
Manuscripts & Editing
What happens to your writing before it becomes a professionally prepared book?
Does my manuscript need editing?
The level of editing required depends on the condition of the manuscript.
Some manuscripts may require proofreading only. Others may need copy editing, language editing, line editing or more substantial developmental work.
A manuscript assessment can help determine the appropriate level of professional attention.
What is the difference between editing and proofreading?
Editing generally works more deeply with the manuscript and may address language, clarity, consistency, sentence construction, readability, structure or other issues depending on the agreed editing level.
Proofreading is normally a later quality-control stage focused on identifying remaining errors before publication.
Will editing change my voice?
Professional editing should improve the manuscript while respecting the author's voice and the agreed editorial approach.
The objective isn't to unnecessarily rewrite your personality out of the book. It is to help present your ideas more clearly and professionally.
Can I send you a manuscript that is still unfinished?
Yes. Depending on what you need, an unfinished manuscript may be suitable for Author Development or manuscript-development support rather than final editing and publication.
Does manuscript length affect the cost?
Yes. Editing workload is strongly affected by word count, manuscript condition and the level of editing required.
This is why some editorial services are priced by word or quoted after the manuscript has been assessed.
Book Design & Formatting
Turning a manuscript into something that looks and functions like a professional book.
What does book design and formatting include?
Depending on the project, it may include interior page layout, typography, chapter styling, page numbering, front and back matter, table of contents, print-ready formatting, eBook formatting and professional cover design.
Do you design book covers?
Yes. Cover design can include the front cover and, for printed books, the complete front, spine and back-cover design required for the chosen production specifications.
Why can't I just use my Word document as the book?
A writing document and a publication-ready book serve different purposes.
Professional formatting prepares the manuscript for the actual reading and production environment, considering elements such as page size, margins, typography, spacing, chapter presentation, page numbering and print specifications.
Can you format both printed books and eBooks?
Yes. Print and digital books have different technical requirements, so files can be prepared according to the formats included in your project.
ISBN & Publishing
Understanding some of the administrative and technical elements behind publication.
What is an ISBN?
An ISBN is an International Standard Book Number used to identify a particular book publication and edition within the book trade and publishing environment.
Whether and how an ISBN is required depends on the publication and format.
Does The Book Grid sell ISBN numbers?
No. We provide ISBN administration and publishing support where this forms part of the project.
Any applicable ISBN arrangement is handled according to the appropriate publishing process rather than treating ISBNs as a standalone product being sold by The Book Grid.
Can you help with the copyright page and book information?
Yes. Publishing support may include preparation of relevant copyright-page information, metadata, book descriptions, author information and other publication details included in the agreed scope.
Do you publish both print books and eBooks?
Yes. Depending on your project, we can support preparation and publication in print, digital format or both.
Does publishing automatically mean my book will be stocked in bookstores?
No. Publishing and distribution are not the same thing.
Publishing involves preparing and making a book available through the agreed publication pathway. Bookstore stocking and wider distribution depend on separate retailer, distributor, wholesaler or sales-channel arrangements.
Any distribution service or arrangement should be specifically stated in writing rather than assumed to be included simply because a book has been published.
Printing & eBooks
Questions about physical production and digital book formats.
Can The Book Grid arrange the printing of my physical books?
Yes. Where physical production is required, The Book Grid can coordinate printing through professional printing partners.
This may include preparing production specifications, obtaining the relevant production quotation, coordinating print-ready files and managing the agreed production process.
Is physical printing included in the publishing package price?
Unless explicitly stated in your written quotation or proposal, physical printing is quoted separately.
This is because the production cost depends on the specifications of the actual book and the quantity required.
What determines the cost of printing?
Factors can include page count, book dimensions, paper type, colour or black-and-white printing, binding, cover finish, quantity and delivery requirements.
A 100-page black-and-white paperback and a 300-page full-colour publication will therefore have very different production costs.
How many copies can I print?
The appropriate quantity depends on your project, budget, production method and intended use.
We can quote according to the number of copies you are considering rather than forcing every author into the same print quantity.
What is an eBook?
An eBook is a book prepared for digital reading. Depending on the intended publication method, digital formats may differ from the fixed page layout used for a printed book.
Can I publish both a printed book and an eBook?
Yes. Your project can include physical and digital versions where appropriate.
Packages & Pricing
Understanding what affects the cost of a professional publishing project.
How much does it cost to publish a book?
There is no single responsible price that applies to every book.
Cost depends on factors such as manuscript length and condition, editing requirements, design complexity, formats, publishing services, printing specifications and the overall project scope.
Our Packages & Pricing page provides starting prices to help authors understand the general investment level.
Why do your packages say “From R…”?
Because two manuscripts can require very different amounts of work.
A short, clean manuscript requiring light preparation cannot reasonably be treated as identical to a long, complex manuscript requiring substantial editorial and design work.
Starting prices allow the final project scope to reflect the actual work required.
Can I buy only one service?
Yes. You do not necessarily need a complete publishing package.
Individual services may be appropriate if your book has already completed other stages of the publishing journey.
What if none of the packages fits my book exactly?
A customised project scope may be appropriate.
Publishing packages provide useful structures, but unusual, complex or specialised projects may require a tailored quotation.
Are printing and delivery included in the package price?
Unless specifically included in your written proposal, physical printing and delivery are quoted separately.
Does marketing pricing include advertising spend?
Advertising spend is separate unless your written proposal specifically states otherwise.
Copyright & Author Rights
Important questions about authorship, ownership and publishing arrangements.
Will I still be the author of my book?
Yes. Receiving editing, design or publishing support does not make the service provider the author of the work.
Specific rights, licences and responsibilities applicable to a publishing project should be set out in the relevant agreement.
Does The Book Grid own my manuscript because I submit it for assessment?
Submitting a manuscript for assessment or publishing services does not, by itself, transfer authorship or ownership of the manuscript to The Book Grid.
Any rights or permissions required for a publishing project should be expressly addressed in the relevant written agreement.
Will I have to sign a publishing agreement?
Projects should be governed by appropriate written terms setting out matters such as scope, payment, responsibilities, rights, approvals and other relevant conditions.
Can I use material belonging to someone else in my book?
Authors are responsible for ensuring they have the necessary rights or permissions for third-party material used in their work where permission is required.
This can include photographs, illustrations, substantial quotations, copyrighted text and other protected material.
Marketing & Promotion
What happens when the book is ready and you need people to know it exists?
Will The Book Grid market my book?
Marketing and promotional support is available where it forms part of the service or package you purchase.
Support may include launch planning, promotional graphics, social media content, promotional copy, author positioning and marketing strategy depending on the agreed scope.
Does publishing automatically mean people will buy my book?
No. Publication makes the book ready or available through the agreed publishing pathway, but it does not guarantee sales.
Book sales can depend on many factors including subject, audience demand, positioning, pricing, visibility, author platform, marketing, availability and reader response.
When should I start thinking about book marketing?
Ideally, marketing should not begin only after the finished books arrive.
Audience, positioning and launch planning can be considered before publication so that the author has time to prepare for the book's release.
Can you guarantee that my book will become a bestseller?
No responsible publishing or marketing service can guarantee that a particular book will become a bestseller.
Our role is to provide the professional services agreed for the project. Actual market performance depends on factors that extend beyond publication alone.
